The Basics: Pump Control Boxes

Are there different types of control boxes? Which pump control box do I need? Does the brand matter? Can I use a control box brand different than that of my submersible motor? All of these questions are valid and should be considered when selecting a control box for your application so lets dive right in! Disclaimer, all of the information below pertains to 3-wire submersible motors which require a pump control box to start. If you are using a 2-wire submersible motor a pump control box is not needed.

The Basics: Pump Control Boxes

Are there different types of control boxes? Pump control boxes can really be separated into three (3) different types, Quick Disconnect (QD), Standard, and Deluxe. The QD boxes are designed for smaller horsepower motors and generally include 1/2hp, 3/4hp, and 1hp applications. Standard control boxes cover 1hp-10hp while Deluxe boxes cover 2hp-15hp. The Deluxe boxes have the addition of a line contactor which allow for an alternate wiring configuration of the pressure switch. Check out our videos on pressure switches and control boxes for more information on this topic. Another notable difference between the QD box and the Standard/Deluxe boxes are the presence of overload protection in the Standard/Deluxe boxes.

Which control box do I need? Generally speaking, pump control boxes are selected by matching them to the horsepower, voltage, and phase of your submersible motor. Most all traditional systems are going to be single phase 230-volt applications so in most instances it comes down to matching them to the horsepower. In situations when there is overlap such as the 1hp models you can choose a QD or Standard control box. The choice usually comes down to preference. The QD box may be cheaper but the standard box will provide more room for wiring and has overload protection built in.

Can I use a control box brand different than that of my submersible motor? The short answer is yes but with one caveat, check that the full load amp rating of the control box is at least the same as your submersible motor. There are variations in the full load current of same horsepower size motors between different manufacturers.
